Invisalign® clear aligners are one of the more popular cosmetic alternatives to braces. However, not everyone can benefit from wearing them, and you may require standard metal braces instead. There are certain factors that you must meet in order to be able to develop a straighter smile through the Invisalign system.
Range of Adjustment
Malocclusion can occur in one of several different levels of severity. The amount of adjustment required, as well as how easy that adjustment will be to conduct in the first place, is going to be different for every patient.
Invisalign clear aligners are only able to consistently treat mild cases of teeth misalignment. Some cases that are between mild and moderate malocclusion can also be corrected through this clear braces alternative. If you want to use Invisalign clear braces, you must confirm the severity of your realignment case with a professional to make sure that more extensive treatment is not necessary.
Have you previously worn braces? If so, are you seeking treatment because your teeth have shifted into their original alignment?
The Invisalign system is excellent at helping teeth that experience relapse from previous orthodontic treatments. If you used to have braces but forgot to wear your retainer, then your teeth are at risk of moving back out of place. If this has happened to you, Invisalign aligners can help because most of the treatment was already provided; the trays guide the teeth back to where they are meant to go.
Disciplined Wear and Age
Invisalign clear aligners need a certain amount of precise care in order to have the permanent effect you seek. The aligners are removable, so you have to remember to wear them for at least 22 hours a day. You also have to make sure your teeth are cleaned after eating before you put the aligners back on, or else the trays trap food particles and encourage tooth decay. You must also be timely in seeing your provider to replace the trays when your new set arrives to support the progress of your treatment plan.
Because Invisalign clear aligners will not work without you following these steps, we tend to only provide Invisalign to adults. Children and teenagers have enough distractions in their daily life that they may not have discipline they need to wear Invisalign trays. Adults, however, can make the time necessary for following these instructions. Additionally, there are more adults who require treatment for alignment relapse than teens, so older patients tend to benefit from the Invisalign system more frequently than teens do.
