Our pediatric dentist at Meslin Pediatric & Family Dentistry, Dr. Min Deng, partners with the team at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to provide dental care for children in a hospital environment. Some parents may have concerns when they are recommended this course of care for their child due to associations between hospitals and emergencies. However, this is not necessarily the case. Hospital dentistry is beneficial to general pediatric dental care for several reasons.
Managing Dental Anxieties
Not all children are comfortable visiting the dentist, and their discomfort can sometimes develop into anxieties or, more significantly, phobias. Children who have a dental phobia will not be able to have a routine appointment at a dental office. If standard visits are impossible to complete, not only are a child’s oral health concerns untreated, but their comfort is also negatively impacted, which only worsens their anxiousness at the dentist.
Hospital dentistry allows us to treat children who have anxieties and dental phobias. When providing dental care at Connecticut Children’s, Dr. Deng partners with a trusted anesthesiologist experienced in safely administering sedation to help children enter a deep state of relaxation. We can then conduct the procedure your child needs while continually monitoring their condition and maintaining their comfort.
Care for Patients with Special Needs
Another instance where hospital dentistry allows us to conduct general dental care is when caring for children who have special needs. Certain medical conditions, such as poor kidney health or malignant hyperthermia, may make treatment too risky to provide in a standard operatory. Additionally, multiple procedures can be difficult to conduct in one sitting for children with special needs.
A hospital setting is better equipped to handle the unique circumstances special needs patients face.
Treating Toddlers with Nursing Caries
Once they are old enough for teeth to erupt into a smile, children can experience tooth decay. A particularly common circumstance for children around two years old is to have caries, or small instances of tooth decay, on multiple teeth from overexposure to bottles. Children around this age do not have the attention span for a lengthy appointment, and their parents may not be able to bring them in for multiple appointments.
Hospital dentistry gives Dr. Deng the ability to restore your child’s oral health in the event of multiple baby bottle caries. She can provide care for this situation more comfortably at Connecticut Children’s than at our standard location.
